Integrating Augmentative Communication Into the IEP

The teaching of communication skills is guided by the IEP. Augmentative communication evaluations should be component of the program development process and must be carefully considered for all nonspeaking students. The components of the system should be outlined within the IEP. Be sure that the student’s use of the system is integrated within and across the school day, including both instructional and non-instructional periods.

*Important to remember: The augmentative communication device is not an IEP goal in itself but rather a means to accomplishing a goal.
