What is Universal Design?

Through reading about Universal Design I have come up with my own explanation of what it all means. Universal Design is a method of designing flexible lessons involving multiple learning styles, so that all students become active learners, expert learners, and fully engaged. I believe the easiest way to put it is that as teachers we are trying to please everyone (everyone meaning each of our students). Teachers will use various types of instruction, materials, manipulatives, and representations. All of this is broken down into three principles: multiple means of representation, multiple means of actions and expressions, and multiple means of engagement. These three principles also translate to the what, how, and why of learning.
